CHAPTER 32

It was a speakeasy, or was a long time ago. The front of the basement establishment was a pet store. Min Gun entered and breathed in the earthy sweet smell of hay and scat. It reminded him of the animals around his parents’ farmstead. The animals that fascinated him to the point of murder.

A single Korean clerk looked him up and down. It was the bandage across his face. Min Gun was used to being a nondescript face in the crowd. That advantage was gone. Likely forever. He drew his silenced Beretta and, with a single snap, the clerk was no more.

In the back, he found the black door his briefing said would be there. Beyond it, he found the black stairs leading down into the sub-basement. He heard EDM music blaring ahead. He put away the Beretta. It was ill suited for crowd work. He adjusted the sling on his right shoulder and brought forth his JS 9, a suppressed submachine gun and one of the best weapons China ever produced. The loud snap it produced would register as little more than a drumbeat in this environment.

Min Gun climbed down the stairs to the vaulted brick sub-basement. The walls were covered in exposed piping and ancient neon lights advertising brands he had never heard of. A black wooden stage dominated the back of the room, where a DJ held court.

Dancing on the aging wooden floor were a dozen kids. The oldest was perhaps twenty-five. Min Gun saw their faces and felt at home. Koreans, one and all.

A rail-thin boy turned to look at Min Gun, alarmed by his face, his age, and the shadow that loomed around his presence.

Min Gun spoke not a word. The JS 9 spoke for him.
